First edition, one of 600 copies. Ruthbook contains photographs Shafran made between 1992-1995 which form a chronological documentation of the beginning of his relationship with his wife Ruth. Shafran first rose to prominence in the 1980s and ’90s with his work for i-D and other style magazines. Having previously worked mostly on commercial assignments RuthBook marks the point where he began to initiate projects himself. Much of his work since has continued to be concerned with exposing the details of everyday domestic life. In an interview with Charlotte Cotton he states: ‘I’m very suspicious of the idea of ‘non-subjects’ in photography, I don’t think there are such things… there are subjects that are not very obviously subjects until they are photographed, regardless of whether that was the intention of the photographer or not. There is a feeling that the significance of our lives is implanted in these subtle and everyday occurrences. RuthBook has that same feeling, that you build ideas about this life and the story that is being told’ (Nigel Shafran: Edited Photographs p.120).
