First edition, presentation copy inscribed by Robbe-Grillet to Dominique Aury, who wrote the notorious Histoire d’O (1954) under the pseudonym Pauline Reage, and was born Anne Desclos. ‘Toujours des murs, toujours des couloirs, toujours des portes ...’; illusion and reality, memory and desire blur in Robbe-Grillet’s script, which Alain Resnais turned into a cinematic masterpiece. The cinéroman or ‘cine-novel’ was popular amongst French New Wave filmmakers as a way of re-presenting and expanding their films. Robbe-Grillet describes the form as being ‘a detailed analysis of an audio-visual whole that is too complex and rapid to be studied very easily during the actual projection.’
