This event at the Sacramento State College (S.S.C.) Gallery marked the first public reading by Jim Morrison of his poem ‘An American Prayer’. Earlier that year he had been shown some of Wallace Berman’s publications by Michael McClure, and the month before this reading had published The Lords / Notes on Vision (1969), his first book of poetry which was issued as loose sheets in a folder similar in style to Berman’s Semina. Morrison saw this as being the beginning of his ‘real’ career as he wrote in a notebook at the time.
