First edition. Heidi is the title of a collaborative performance work and video made by Paul McCarthy and Mike Kelley in Vienna in 1992. In it the two artists use stuffed dolls, masks, and mirrors to act out an interpretation of Joanna Spyri’s 19th century children’s novel Heidi which includes violence, incest, and an obsession with bodily functions and secretions. McCarthy explained that their intention was to create convoluted associations between Heidi, the purity myth in America and Europe and the media view of family life, horror movies and ornamentation.
