First edition. Cuerpo correccional is a reexamination of the work of 1970s Chilean artist Carlos Leppe, with photographs and video stills of his performances and installations which were primarily concerned with sexual and identity issues. It was published by Francisco Zeger, who at the time of publication was employing Leppe at his advertising agency, and was ‘a genuine provocation at the time because of its solid binding, firm spine, varnished covers, well-reproduced photos on proper paper, and printing-press typeface, whose name is given on the colophon page, instead of typewriter script. The Chilean art scene has sometimes been described in terms of its makeshift publications, in some cases no more sophisticated than stencils, what Justo Pastor Mellado has called “the report-to-the-assembly aesthetic”: a few typewritten pages stapled together or joined with a paperclip. The artist’s greater or lesser adherence to this report model mattered a great deal, especially in political terms. Cuerpo correccional marked a rupture with the photocopies, ring binders, and bristol board of many artists’ books of those years. (Latin American Photobooks 139).
