Heckenhauer, Berlin in 2005, with one of the prints that was available at the exhibition laid in. The photographs were taken between Spring 1982 and Autumn 1993 on several visits to Berlin. Gossage first came to the city to participate at the Werkstatt für Photographie, a collective led by Michael Schmidt and based at the Volkshochschule in Kreuzberg. Throughout the 1980s Schmidt invited a number of American photographers such as William Eggleston, Larry Clark, Lewis Baltz, and Gossage to Berlin where they made work and taught workshops with young German and occasionally other European photographers. Among those whose work was informed by these exchanges were Volker Heinze, Thomas Weski, Joachim Brohm, and Paul Graham.

‘So the Berlin you see in this book is of another time, a time when the Wall defined the city, its people, their thoughts and mine. Everyone will tell you a different story. It’s all just memory now, a history book.’
