(FELDMANN, Hans-Peter).
Hans-Peter Feldmann Bücher.
(Bremen): (Neus Museum Weserburg), (1999).

Square 8vo (210 × 208 mm), pp.[28]. 30 black-and-white photographs. Black-and-white photo-illustrated saddle-stapled card wrappers; lightly rubbed. Printed leaflet with text by Guy Schraenen in German, English, and Fremch laid in as issued. Near-fine.

First edition of 750 copies. This artists’ book was issued to accompany an exhibition of Feldmann’s books which are compiled from vernacular sources such as family photo albums, postcards, newspapers and magazines, as well as his own photographs. Hans-Peter Feldmann Bücher consists of photographs of the book covers, starting with the 'Bilder' series which he began in 1968 and ending with Die Johanneskirche in Düsseldorf in 1999.

Although his work was not well known in the 1960s and ‘70s, he was later recognised as having demonstrated an early use of appropriation as an artistic strategy, and played a seminal role in the development of conceptual photography in the 1980s. Despite this recognition Feldmann spent the 1980s seemingly avoiding the art world and instead elected to run a shop selling souvenirs, curiosities, and antiques in Düsseldorf. He went on to start a mail-order operation for thimbles, and then a business selling toys made of tin.
