Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti formed Chris & Cosey in 1981 when Throbbing Gristle disbanded. They still perform and record and are now known as Carter Tutti. This Los Angeles performance saw them share the bill with Australian industrial band SPK, who themselves disbanded the following year with frontman Graeme Revell persuing a career composing filmscores for Hollywood.
The venue at 940 S. Figueroa, Downtown Los Angeles was originally opened in 1924 as part of a five-storey clubhouse built for the Friday Morning Club, which had been founded by suffragist and abolitionist Caroline Severance, a suffragist, abolitionist, and pioneer organiser of women's clubs. Initially it was known as The Playhouse which hosted a live venue and vaudeville house. It was also known by other names including the Major Theater, the Times Theater, the Figueroa Playhouse, and the Figueroa 9th St. In 1977 William Larsen Jr, who had previously founded a private club for members of the Academy of Magical Arts called the Magic Castle, bought the building and renamed it the Variety Arts Center which operated until 1989 with a program that paid tribute to variety and vaudeville entertainers.
