SYNTHETIC VOICES

BORTHWICK, Mark.
Artists' Zine Versions of: 1978 (1997), Synthetic Voices (1998), 2000-1 Maison Martin Margiela (1998), Social Documentaries Amid This Pist (2002).
[N.p]: [Self-published], [c.2002].

4 vols. 4to (272 × 212 mm), pp.[80]; [120]; [72]; [238]. Black-and-white reproductions throughout. Saddle-stapled self-wrappers; inevitable toning to newsprint, crease to front of 2000-1. Overall a near-fine set.

Mark Bothwick is one of a group of photographers who emerged in the 1990s and redefined the boundaries of fashion editorial photography. Borthwick issued this set of bootleg versions of four of his earlier books in a small, unknown number of copies, originally intended for friends who could no longer find the original editions which had then sold out. All but the Social Documentaries Amid This Pist reprint appear to have been made by laying copies of the books directly on a photocopier or scanner. An important and influential set.
