ARAKI'S FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK

ARAKI, Nobuyoshi.
Oh Nippon!
Tokyo. Miki Shuppan. 1971.

4to (270 × 206 mm), pp.[128]. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs throughout. Design by Mikuo Nakamura. Textured endpapers; some offsetting from signature. Photo-illustrated wrappers; rubbing to rear cover, light wear to corners and tips, shallow reading crease to spine, small spot of paint to front. Signed 'Oh Araki' with a self-portrait drawing in black ink to first page. A very good copy.

First edition of Araki's first conventionally published book following his series of photocopy books. Due to problems with the Japanese censors, many of Araki's proposed images were rejected; a compromise, at least in terms of Araki's original vision and imagery, was found with the development by Nakamura of a layout that split the rejected images into sections which could be reassembled by folding opposing pages together across multiple spreads. With the censors appeased Araki was able to publish something close to the book he had originally intended.
