Original printed card promotional band; lightly toned with an indentation mark, light wear to edges. Original folded poster; slightly toned. Small old bookseller's sticker to rear cover. Signed by Lucas in green ink to first page. A just about near-fine copy.
First edition, a signed copy, complete with the card band and folded poster. Lucas's photographs in Cinqua Anni a Milano document five years of protest and increasingly violent civil unrest in Milan between 1968 and 1973. It includes clashes between extreme left extra-parliamentary and paramilitary groups such as Lotta Continua and the Red Brigade with the state, and with their fascist opposition. On May 17 1972 the police commissioner Luigi Calabresi was murdered in a revenge attack for the part he allegedly had played in the death of Giuseppe Pinelli, an anarchist who died in police custody following his arrest after the December 12 1969 Piazza Fontana bombings. During the subsequent investigation into Calabresi's death, a copy of this book was used during the interrogation of suspects who were forced to point out those activists thought to be responsible. Subsequently the violence intensified on all sides and continued for several years. This period is now known in Italy as the Anni di piombo [Years of Lead].
The poster depicts a group of riot police outside the State University of Milan whilst it was under occupation by a group of current and former students. The promotional band present with this copy declares that the poster is to be sent to government ministers of the past, present and future.
