EARLY ZINE

(McGINLEY, Ryan).
Ryan McGinley.
[New York]: [Self-published], [c.2001].

8vo (217 × 140 mm), pp.[20] (inc. covers). 19 black-and-white photographs. Saddle-stapled in the original plastic Ziploc bag. McGinley’s copyright stamp embossed on rear wrapper; light creases and cockling, light wear to bag. An excellent copy.

A rare zine that links Ryan McGinley’s self-published first book The Kids are Alright (2001), with his eponymously titled first regularly published book which was issued by Index in 2002.

McGinley came to photography whilst studying graphic design at Parsons School of Design, New York.

‘Making zines had always been a big part of growing up for me. It was part of punk culture. Using black and white photocopiers to get across my interests and distributing them within circles of friends. This is what led me to study graphic design in college. I was exposed to computers and to desktop publishing. Since I didn’t study photography I never learned how to use a color darkroom. Studying graphic design I was aware of technology and learned to use negative scanners when they first came out. It was like a darkroom on my desktop. I would just shoot film and then scan the negatives and print out the pictures. It all took place in my bedroom. I decided to make high-quality handmade books of all the photographs I had been taking up until that point and given them to friends that were in the photographs. Eventually, I did a do-it-yourself exhibition and made 100 books [The Kids are Alright]. Those handmade books got my name out there. People responded to them’ (McGinley in conversation with Gerald Matt and Synne Genzmer in September 2007 at the Kunsthalle Wien).

This is the first such zine by McGinley we have seen. In 2001 He gave it to a friend with whom he stayed on several occasions when visiting London in the early 2000s.
