Inscribed by McGinley in black ink on first page, he has additionally crossed out his own name on the title-page and written the recipients name above his signature. A very good copy.
First edition, a presentation copy, inscribed in the year of publication to a friend with whom McGinley stayed on several occasions when visiting London in the early 2000s: ‘April 4th. 2002 / For James & Steven / My two favourite faggots / in London. Hopefully I’ll / see you guys soon and James I’m taking / pictures of you / weather [sic] you like / it or not / kiss, kiss, kiss. / Love, / Ryan’.
McGinley was a regular contributor to Index magazine, who gave him his first commercial assignments after he sent them a copy of his self-published book The Kids are Alright (2001). The present work is his first regularly published book, in a 2007 interview with Aaron Schuman for Seesaw Mcginley recounts how it came about and how that led to his 2003 Whitney show:
‘... about three months into working for Index, they established Index Books... and they said, ‘Your book is already done, you have it all on the computer, and we really love it. Why don’t we publish it?’ The turnaround was really fast; I think it took about three weeks. The readership of Index was an art-oriented crowd, and wherever Index was available my book was available, so a lot of people in the art world got it. Eventually it ended up on the desk of Sylvia Wolff, the curator of photography at the Whitney. She came down to my studio... I showed her what I was working on that summer... She was interested, so she offered me a show.’
