CATALOGUE FOR THE 'FIRST EXHIBITION IN BRITAIN OF COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHS BY A BRITISH ARTIST'

MITCHELL, Peter.
A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission. Pictures from Peter Mitchell. Impressions Gallery of Photography. November 1979.
(York): (Impressions Gallery of Photography), (1979).

4to (296 × 209 mm), pp.[8]. 4 colour photographs. Text by David Mellor. Tan card covers printed in black and red, saddle-stapled; light handling marks. Fine.

First edition, issued to accompany Peter Mitchell’s landmark exhibition at Impressions Gallery, York, which had a significant impact on his contemporaries. In the 1970s, whilst working as a truck driver delivering electrical goods in Leeds, Mitchell began photographing factory workers and small shop owners in the rapidly changing city as he made his rounds. The photographs here are mostly taken in Leeds with some from Sheffield and London also.

In the foreword to a recent book of Mitchell’s work, Martin Parr referred to A New Refutation of the Viking 4 Space Mission as being ‘the first colour show, at a British photographic gallery, by a British photographer.’
