14 gelatin silver prints sized 300 × 250 mm / 12 × 10" and smaller, 4 contact sheets; some prints have a studio stamp, annotations, numbering, glue marks, captions and cropping marks/directions in pencil to verso, a few with numbers on recto. Occasional handling marks and creasing to corners. Very good.

Richard Lannoy played an important role in the formation of the Independent Group. Whilst working as a gallery assistant at the ICA he found himself opposed to the conservative modernism that the institution represented. In seeking to provide a forum for others who felt this way he approached Dorothy Morland, the then Assistant Director with the idea that young members would like to take a more active role in the programming of events and would like to hold regular discussionary forums. These sessions began in April 1952 with a slideshow given by Eduardo Paolozzi, the participants were initially referred to as the Young Group. Three months later Lannoy left his position at the ICA and departed for India, the group temporarily disbanded until the Autumn when Peter Reyner Banham assumed leadership of what was now known as the Independent Group.

Lannoy photographed throughout India and extensively in Benares, Hinduism's most sacred city. These prints were exhibited as a part of the 1971 Tantra show at the Hayward Gallery which was accompanied by a catalogue by Philip Rawson, from whose estate they were acquired.
