WAPLINGTON, Nick.
Photo Essay Project (You are only what you see).
[London]: [Self-published], [2007].

10 vols. 4to (275 × 213 mm), pp.[108]. 1,000 colour photographs. Plain endpapers. Cloth-covered boards (each volume bound in a different colour cloth), spines and upper sides stamped in gilt. Each volume signed and numbered 1/10 by Waplington in Pencil to front free endpaper. Original black cloth-covered board slipcase. Fine.

First edition, one of 10 sets only. In 1998 Waplington began collecting images that were posted on online photo sharing communities. A large number of these photographs were posted by soldiers and their families. They show life in combat zones, primarily Iraq and Afghanistan, loved ones at home, tomfoolery and many banal moments and unusual objects. To these sourced images Waplington has added an unspecified number of his own photographs, which are sequenced so that each of the ten books loosely imagines the life of one soldier. One set of books was exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery, London in 2007 where the photographs were also shown in the form of a slideshow accompanied by a live feed from KCEO Radio, San Diego.
