First edition. The All Japan Students’ Photo Association was originally founded in 1952 but in the mid-1960s it became increasingly politicized with the encouragement of Shomei Tomtsu and Kikuji Kawada. Kono chijo ni wareware no kuni ha nai is an environmental protest book produced under the auspices of the Committee for the Campaign against Pollution. It is concerned with the environmental and social issues that arose from Japan’s rapid economic expansion in the postwar period. These include pollution and the consequences of toxic waste disposal. Several pages are devoted to Minamata disease, a neurological syndrome caused by mercury poisoning which resulted from contaminated industrial wastewater being released into the sea by the Chisso Corporation.
