A small collection of Six of the books in Roni Horn’s epic and ambitious, ongoing encyclopedic series ‘To Place’. Each volume deals with a different theme, and together they combine to build a portrait of both Iceland, and the artist herself. There are currently ten volumes, and Horn has suggested that the series has the potential to continue indefinitely.


Lava.

4to (260 × 209 mm), pp.[96]. Black-and-white and colour photographs. Design by Horn with Anthony McCall Associates. Orange endpapers. Charcoal grey cloth-covered boards, front lettered in black, silver dot stamped to front and to spine; light rubbing to extremities. Near-fine.

First edition of 750. Lava is the third book of the series 'To Place', it contains photographs of pieces of lava collected in Iceland, they are reproduced in the book at their actual size.


Pooling Waters.

First edition of 1000. Pooling Waters is the fourth book of the series 'To Place', it consists of two books, the first contains photographs of natural springs, pipelines, and swimming pools taken between 1990-93 in Iceland, the second is a collection of writings inspired by Horn’s experiences there.


Verne’s Journey.

4to (260 × 208 mm), pp.56. Colour and black-and-white photographs. Brown endpapers. Black cloth-covered boards, front lettered in black, green dot stamped to front and spine; light rubbing to extremities. Near-fine.

First edition of 1000. Verne’s Journey is the fifth book of the series 'To Place', it contains photographs taken between 1984 - 1994 in the vicinity of Snaefellsjökull, a 700,000-year-old stratovolcano with a glacier covering its summit.


Haraldsdóttir.

4to (260 × 208 mm), pp.[96]. Black-and-white and colour photographs. Maroon endpapers. Black cloth-covered boards, front lettered in black, blue dot stamped to front and spine; light rubbing to extremities. Near-fine.

First edition of 1100. Haraldsdóttir is the sixth book of the series 'To Place'. Horn took these photographs over a six-week period in the summer of 1994. During this time she travelled around Iceland with a companion named Margrét, stopping to photograph her in various different outdoor hot water pools, pots, and baths.


Arctic Circles.

First edition of 900. Becoming a Landscape is the eighth book of the series 'To Place', it consists of two books which each contain a series of near identical photographs, taken moments apart, of the hot springs near Geysir, interspersed with portraits of a young man.
